When compared to it’s neighbors, Palos Heights is a young community, having incorporated in 1959. In the city’s brief history, Palos Heights has grown to be one of the most desirable places to live; full of quiet, tree-shaded neighborhoods of well-kept homes and lush parklands.
Until 1935 the area, now known as Palos Heights, was open farmland bordering Harlem Avenue. The Robert Bartlett Building Corporation purchased the land in 1935 with a plan to move real estate sales out of the doldrums with some innovative ideas. The plots of land were to be sold for $99 as “farmettes” of quarter-acre size and each “farmette” sale included a dozen trees, six grape vines and several incubated chicken eggs. The inclusion of the trees in the sales plan became a lasting legacy to the community while the success of the chickens is questionable.
As Bartlett’s development grew, so did the talk of incorporating as a community. The fourth try to incorporate was successful on April 16, 1959 and Harlem Heights became the city of Palos Heights. The first annexation of new land came 19 days later and Palos Heights began it’s growth.
Culture and outstanding shopping are also a part of the Palos community. Along Harlem Avenue one can find the downtown business district, referred to as the Olde Palos Shopping Center. The shops residing within the business district are many and varied; offering everything from fine dining, coffee shops, portrait photography, auto service centers, etc. Moraine Valley Community College, located in neighboring Palos Hills, serves as the cultural core for the entire Palos area.
