In 1969, while plans were underway to incorporate the area, acting mayor Sam Kelly suggested the new city be named “Darien” after a city he had recently visited and admired in Connecticut. Darien is a lovely city in DuPage County where, according to the 2010 census, the population was 22, 086 residents.
The town motto for Darien is “A nice place to live” which happens to be the same town motto as “Hill Valley” from the Back to the Future movies.
In the late 1800’s the first settlers to arrive, in what would become Darien, had names that are still a part of the community today; names such as Smart, Oldfield, Neiman and Beggs.
The city covers 6.30 square miles, of which 98% is land. According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household in the city was $78,122.00 per year.
Darien is bordered by the cities of Downers Grove, Westmont, Woodridge and Willowbrook. Best of all, it has easy access to three major thoroughfares crossing Chicago’s southwest suburbs: Interstate 55, Interstate 355 and Interstate 294. The availability of easy travel routes into and around the city of Chicago has contributed greatly to Darien’s continued stability.
