The village seal identifies Arlington Heights as the “City of Good Neighbors”. Arlington Heights, located 25 miles northwest of Chicago’s downtown, is the most populous community in the United States that is incorporated as a “village”.
Arlington Heights is best known for Arlington Park Race Track, founded in 1927, home of the Arlington Million, a Breeders’ Cup qualifying event. The village is also home to the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, which houses one of the largest collections in the state. Sixty-seven percent of Arlington Heights residents hold library cards which entitles them to experience the vast holdings offered in at least 17 different languages.
The village experienced its greatest population explosion in the 1950s and 60s, with the spread of automobile ownership, the expansion of the Chicago-area economy, and the baby boom. Located close to O’Hare International Airport, Arlington Heights is more than adequately served with rail service and major highways.
As of 2010, the top two employers in the village were Arlington Park, with 4,500 employees, and Northwest Community Hospital with 4,000 employees. Not far down the list of top employers is the Township High School District 214 with 2,700.
