Is Smart Home Technology Worth the Cost?

If you’re planning a home renovation or remodel in the Chicagoland area, you might be wondering if including smart-home technology is worth the cost. These may make your life more convenient, but does the convenience justify the price?

The answer is: It depends. While there’s no clear-cut yes or no response to this question, the truth is that for some people, the cost may absolutely be worth the price, and they’ll make great use of these updates. For others, smart home benefits might be nice, but are not necessary. In that case, it might be wise to invest that money elsewhere.

Pros of Smart Home Technology

As we mentioned, one of the smart home benefits is convenience. If your fridge can tell you what groceries you need to buy or your home can automatically turn on lights when you enter your home in Hinsdale, it can make your life easier.

Smart home technology can provide extra security, which we can all appreciate. Apps connect to smart devices in your home to show you who’s at the front door or who is in various rooms. Because you can access these on your phone, you can monitor your home from anywhere.

Another popular smart home update is replacing the current thermostat with a smart thermostat. Not only do most of these allow you to control your home’s temperature from anywhere, but they can also reduce your energy consumption and save you money on your Elmhurst home’s electric bill.

Cons of Smart Home Technology

One downside to a smart home renovation is the risk of over-remodeling. If you complete a kitchen transformation with all of the latest tech, you might not be able recuperate that money if and when you sell your home. It might be better choose one, maybe two, smart appliances and spend the rest of the money on better countertops or cabinets.

Another issue with a house featuring all the latest smart home technology is that sometimes technology fails. If there’s an internet outage, you might be unable to access your thermostat or security system. While it can make your life easier, a smart-home renovation shouldn’t mean that you rely solely on technology moving forward.
