Henry Middaugh began his journey as one of the founding fathers of Clarendon Hills when he came to Chicago in 1854. Originally settling in Chicago, Middaugh later decided to move further west. He chose an area eighteen miles west of Chicago in DuPage County known, at the time, as West Hinsdale. In 1873 West Hinsdale officially became known as the village of Clarendon Hills, and Middaugh became one of its wealthy inhabitants.
When Middaugh arrived in the area, he purchased 270 acres of land north of the recently established railroad. This purchase made him the principle owner of Clarendon Hills property north of the tracks. Initially, Middaugh used his land exclusively as a farm, but in 1891 he built his new home, the Middaugh Mansion, on the land and then, with time, much of the land became a good part of the Hinsdale Golf Club.
Clarendon Hills is often referred to as “Daisy Fields” and Middaugh played an inadvertent part in this when planting daisies on his property. Each year on Father’s Day the town participates in the Daisy Dash to celebrate the tradition.
A great part of the convenience of life in Clarendon Hills is the Metra daily rail service into Union Station in downtown Chicago. Additionally, Pace operates connecting bus services.
According to the Village’s 2011 Annual Financial Report, the top employers in Clarendon Hills were: Jewel Osco, Hinsdale Golf Club and the Village of Clarendon Hills.
In 2009, the Clarendon Hills Middle School was awarded a Blue Ribbon by the United States Department of Education, recognizing it as one of the top schools in the nation. The Clarendon Hills Middle School system is ranked in the top 2% of the middle school systems in Illinois.
